A Chair Affair
On May 30, 2013 the Niagara Furniture Bank, which provides gently used furniture to those in need in the Niagara Region, will be hosting the inaugural Chair Affair fundraising event. The concept is this: artists and designers in the community have selected chairs from the Furniture Bank warehouse and "up-cycled" them into works of art and functional furniture pieces. These pieces will be auctioned at the event on May 30th, with the proceeds going directly toward the core operations of the Furniture Bank.

A Great Way to Support the Awesome Work of MCC

There is a dedicated team of Southridge members who are preparing to take part in the annual MCC Relief Sale in New Hamburg.  Each year this event raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the incredible work of MCC that focuses relief, development and peace (www.mcc.org). 

The team lead by members of our Vineland location has been able to raise over $10,000 each year through the sale of bedding plants, homemade grape juice, and a silent auction.  Their goal is to make this year their best year yet…and you can help!

Swap Clothes and Fight Sex Trafficking

Why: As part of the Global Action Plan,  three people from Southridge realized that they shared a passion to help women free themselves from the sex trade industry.  Based on this, they decided to partner with an Organization based in Hamilton called "Walk With Me" and run a clothing swap to raise funds and awareness on the issue of human trafficking.

Nearly ten years ago, Gateway Christian Fellowship began relationships with a few different churches in Honduras. Over time, the need became apparent to open a school in the rural community of Samaritana, to provide an education for more than a hundred children in this community who had no access to school.  People from Gateway starting raising funds in order to begin construction of this school in Samaritana. Shelter Volunteer Need
We’ve just passed our 8th year anniversary of the Southridge Shelter and are blown away by what God has done in this community and through the many, many people who have been involved!

Travel Opportunity to Thailand

Jason and Corina Reimer and their two sons, Jesse and Chase, are a family from Southridge who are currently living in Thailand. The Reimers are providing support for Abundant Life home, an orphanage for children who are affected by HIV/AIDS to experience a loving home in a family environment. The Abundant Life Home provides for their medical costs and education and supports tutor and nanny salaries, food, rent, and maintenance of the homes.

MDS Ontario is partnering with MDS New York in the rebuilding phase on Staten Island, NY, as a result of Hurricane Sandy, last fall.  We need short term volunteers (1 to 2 weeks) as well as long term leaders such as Project Director, Office Manager, Cooks and Crew Leaders to help people get back into their homes. MDS appreciates the volunteers that have already signed up, March is filled and Apr is filling quickly.

Ten Thousand Villages Vineland Sale

Last month, more than seventy-five volunteers descended on our Vineland location as part of the Ten Thousand Villages Sale. During the two-day sale, nearly $30,000 worth of fair-trade products were sold, plus several thousand additional dollars that were raised through baked goods and coffee sales to benefit Community Cares of West Niagara.

Fourteen people from the Southridge community descended on Ecuador last week, taking part in an Exposure Trip hosted by Compassion. We had the opportunity to observe and serve at a child sponsorship project, visit families in their homes, and have breakfast with leadership development program (LDP) students who have been sponsored in order to complete post-secondary education.

Tomorrow morning, November 6, fourteen people from Southridge will get on a plane and travel to Quito, Ecuador. We will be spending time with Compassion International, to experience firsthand their model of holistic child development, visiting the Child Survival Program in the Ecuadorian Andes that Southridge sponsors. Also, everyone from the group will have the opportunity to visit with their sponsored child during this Exposure Trip.

Carmen and I have been working over the past several months with Compassion to arrange the itinerary and logistics for this trip and we are confident that this will be a life-changing experience for everyone …
